On October 5, 2022, the Department of Employment’s Director-General, Mr. Pairoj Chotikasathien, reported that the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security had coordinated internally with the Embassy in Helsinki, and the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 17 Thai workers who filed a complaint to the Finnish police for cases of forced labour, borrowing money from Thailand, bad accommodation and unfair wages. Today, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong, assigned him and his team to pick up this group of Thai workers who have returned with a coordinator as the fruit-picking season has ended. Deputy Mayor of Ban Phru, Mr. Sakrawee Chewasereechon, along with the heads of departments under the Ministry of Labour and members of the homeworkers group, welcomed them at the “Ban Phru Straw Rope Weaving” group, located at 29/1 Chum Saeng 4 Road, Ban Phru Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. Mrs. Thienrat said that from the visit, she found that this group was promoted in employment and occupation by the Songkhla Provincial Employment Office. On August 29, 2022, Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the National Informal Workers Management Committee No. 1/2022. The Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, attended the meeting at the Ministry of Labour. General Prawit said that the government recognizes the importance of informal workers. There are new forms of employment, such as employment through platforms. The existing labour laws still do not cover some parts, resulting in some informal workers not having entitlements to the rights, protection, and welfare they should. Therefore, the Ministry of Labour was assigned to accelerate the draft bill promoting the quality of life and protection of informal workers. The Cabinet approved the draft on December 28, 2021, and it is currently under consideration by the Council of State to come into effect immediately.
