Deputy Labour Minister Drives DSD Forwards Towards Upgrade to Ministry of Economy

Content Description

The Deputy Labour Minister met with government officials under the Department of Skill Development, emphasizing that everyone must work together to help drive the mission to become a Ministry of Economy.

On September 21, 2020, Deputy Labour Minister Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat presided over the seminar to deliver policies to drive skill development for 2021. The Department of Skill Development’s Director-General Mr. Tawat Benchatikul, executives and government officials under the Department of Skill Development across the country attended, for a total of over 400 people. The occasion took place at the Royal Hills Golf Resort and Spa Hotel, Nakhon Nayok.

Prof. Narumon said that she was pleased to have the opportunity to meet and talk with government officials under the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development, to listen to the policies and guidelines for driving skill development and jointly prepare the action plan for 2021. Under the leadership of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the government has given importance to the foundation of the country. It has established a 20-year national strategy to make the country a stable, prosperous, sustainable country and become a high-income country with a strong economy and the ability to compete both inside and outside the nation. However, in the past, the educational institutions’ productivity did not meet the needs of industrial and private labour markets.

The Department of Skill Development (DSD) is, therefore, an important factor in the economy in training the skills of students or graduates at different levels, in line with industry needs. The curriculum that arose from the cooperation between the Department of Skill Development and the private sector is courses that answer national development needs and acknowledged by Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha. Therefore, the desire is for the Ministry of Labour to be upgraded to a Ministry of Economy. In particular, after the Covid-19 epidemic, many workers in the system were largely laid off. Therefore, the DSD must develop the skills for the workers in the system to have more diverse skills to support self-employment.

The Deputy Labour Minister said that in driving the Ministry of Labour to become a Ministry of Economy, it’s not just a matter of finding work to do, caring for welfare, or taking care of the insured only; it is also about the creation of giving, especially the creation of a quality workforce into the economy which corresponds to the strengths of the DSD on the development of craftsmanship skills that require advanced techniques. This will also include new industries in the S-Curve, 12 targeted industries in the Special Economic Zone. In these areas, there is a need for skilled workers as well.

“The dedication of knowledge, capability, the physical and mental strength of everyone will help drive such policies and working principles to achieve the government’s vision, which is “committed to making Thailand a stable, prosperous and sustainable country.” I would like to encourage all executives, government officials, and civil servants and wish this seminar to be a tangible success to drive the national strategy, master plan, and important policies of the Ministry of Labour, to make further economic progress of the nation,” concluded the Deputy Labour Minister.
