Deputy PM Emphasizes MOL Accelerate Workforce Development to Support Industry and Economic Development

                On October 1, 2020, at 10.00 hours, Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the National Labour Development and Vocational Training Coordination Committee No. 1/2020 at Meeting Room 109, 1st floor, Office of the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister, Government Houses. Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin was vice-chairperson of the event. Deputy Labour Minister Mrs. Narumon Pinyosinwat and Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol also joined the meeting, along with relevant government agencies and private organizations. The Department of Skills Development was the secretary of the meeting. The meeting acknowledged the Subcommittee operations under the National Labour Development and Vocational Training Coordination Committee and jointly considered the guidelines for developing a manpower development plan for S-Curve target industries in 2021-2022 for agencies with the missions in education and training government agencies. The meeting also covered occupational development guidelines for the disabled under the Person with Disabilities Empowerment Act B.E. 2550 and amendments (second version) B.E. 2556, and the fund to support and develop the quality of life for people with disabilities.

                Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said that following the problem increasing unemployment rates in Thailand, caused by the recession, the Covid-19 pandemic, and rapidly changing technology. These factors have caused changes in labour demand in the industrial sector. Therefore, the government has utilized the operating mechanism of the National Labour Development and Vocational Training Coordination Committee, with elements from agencies involved in the development of the country’s workforce from all sectors, joining together to plan workforce development of manpower and match people and jobs accordingly. This will allow Thai workers to create jobs and employment so that the Thai economy and society can move forward in the New Normal, coupled with technology that has changed dramatically.

              General Prawit thanked the committee for coming together to suggest useful ideas on manpower development policies at all levels of the country, preparing new workers and upgrading the workforces’ skills, to have knowledge and capabilities that meet the needs of the industry. Efforts must receive cooperation from all sectors, including the education, public, and private sectors. He asked all departments to integrate and work together, to unify the development of the country’s manpower in the same direction.
