Labour Minister Concerned for Workers in Scaffolding Collapse in Phuket, Assigns Advisor to Visit Victims and Emphasize Legality of Foreign Workers

           Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul showed concern for workers in scaffolding construction of condominiums which collapsed over the workers, resulting in 3 deaths and 8 injuries. Advisor to the Labour Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jak Punchoopet and committee traveled to Phuket to monitor progress on assistance to employees according to social security benefits. The committee urged employers to use legitimate foreign workers protected according to the rights specified by the law. Kayw Soe Wai, Myanmar labour representative in Ranong Province (Labor attache Myanmar Embassy in Thailand) also joined the occasion. 

 

 

         On August 14, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul assigned Advisor to the Labour Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jak Punchoopet and Deputy Director-General of the Department of Employment Theanrat Nawamawat traveled to Phuket, to the scene of the condominium scaffolding which collapsed over 11 workers. The scene was located on Wiset Road, Rawai, Mueang Phuket. The committee monitored the progress of assistance provided to injured and deceased employees from the incident. It found that 8 workers were injured and 3 were trapped in the building and later found dead. Phuket Built Co., Ltd. has a contractor which is the employer of the workers who suffered from the incident in residential construction operations.
         From there, the Advisor to the Labour Minister, along with the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Employment, Myanmar labour representative in Ranong and committee visited and gave hampers to 2 employees in Wachira Phuket Hospital. The first employee sustained a fracture to the left pelvis, and the second employee sustained broken bones in their right arm and ribs. For the 3 deceased employees, beneficiaries will receive benefits from the Social Security Office. The benefits are divided into funeral expenses of 33,000 Baht per person, compensation for death at 70 percent of their monthly wage for 10 years, amount to 720,720 Baht per person, the old-age pension which depends on the duration of work and the wage rate received, totaling 2,320,121.20 Baht. The compensation does not include medical expenses and payment for hospital stay for the employees.
         Also, today, the Advisor to the Labour Minister along with the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Employment attended the funeral of the deceased at Wat Sawang Arom, Rawai, Mueang. A donation of 33,000 Baht was made to the relatives of each deceased employee.
