MOL Joins Labour Commission, House of Representatives in Organizing Seminar to Promote “Draft Laws for Informal Workers”

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin commenced the workshop to promote “Draft Laws for Informal Workers” to raise awareness, listen to suggestions and jointly consider advancing the Act to Promote and Improve the Quality of Life of Informal Workers B.E.… to support changing situations and improve the quality of life of informal workers for the better.

          On March 25, 2021, at the Grand Ballroom, 4th floor, Miracle Grand Convention Hotel Laksi, Bangkok, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin presided over the opening of a workshop project to promote the “Draft Law for Informal Workers.” Chairman of the Labour Commission Mr. Suthep U-On gave a welcoming and Chair of the Subcommittee on Policy and Labour Law Studies and Spokesperson of the Labour Committee Ms. Anusee Tubsuwan gave a report. The Labour Minister said that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha and the Ministry of Labour under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan gives importance to improving the quality of life. It aims to solve inequality and provide remedies to reduce the burden on workers’ cost of living. The Labour Minister gives priority to the workforce, including “informal workers,” and is ready to provide care for a better quality of life. There are policies to expedite legislation on the promotion and development of informal workers’ quality of life, aiming to support all informal workers from changing situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic and digital transformation, which has affected employment on online platforms where employment conditions are not yet clear. It is a new form of employment that requires further study, control, and care.

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin said that the Ministry of Labour has the same goals as the Labour Commission, House of Representatives, and the subcommittee on the study of labour policy and law. It strives to care for workers to have a good quality of life, which is an important part of helping to restore and develop the country’s economy today. Therefore, the draft Act has been drawn up to promote and develop informal workers’ quality of life. Today, the seminar is for all stakeholders who play an important role in supporting and driving the draft Act to Promote and Improve the Quality of Life of Informal Workers B.E.… to be enacted soon.

          Chair of the Subcommittee on Policy and Labour Law Studies and Spokesperson of the Labour Committee Ms. Anusee Tubsuwan said that the workshop to promote “Draft Laws for Informal Workers” today was organized by the Labour Commission, House of Representatives, together with the Ministry of Labour, It aims to promote awareness about the draft Act to Promote and Improve the Quality of Life of Informal Workers B.E.… and to listen to the problems and suggestions regarding the Act. It also aims to promote cooperation between the Labour Commission, House of Representatives, and the Ministry of Labour in considering pushing for the Act to Promote and Improve the Quality of Life of Informal Workers B.E.…together. The workshop had a target group of 300 participants, comprised of participants from the Labour Commission and the Subcommittee, Advisors, Experts, Scholars, and Secretariat to the Commission, House of Representatives, labour experts, lecturers, government officials, civil servants and observers, informal workers, self-employed workers, company representatives, business owners, civil society network members and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in informal workers.

          Most of today’s participants were informal workers, where no one has yet taken care of the benefits. The seminar today will give workers confidence, which are informal workers driving the policy to promote, protect and develop labour skills to have more potential by exchanging opinions and listening to suggestions in labour protection, welfare, income, occupation, and network registration. The results from this seminar will be used to drive the policy and the draft Act to Promote and Improve the Quality of Life of Informal Workers B.E.… before presenting to the Cabinet, the Council of State, and Parliament, to drive the policy towards success resulting in tangible results for the benefit of the workforce, especially for informal workers to continue to have a better quality of life.
