The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai Uthaipatanacheep spoke about the minimum wages and the consideration of both pros and cons presented from the perspective of employees, employers and academics. He explained that the Wage Committee had already received proposals from provincial wage subcommittees which are made up of employer and employee representatives; the process is now in the collection stage which will be completed at the end of September. Next will be the selection phase conducted by the academic subcommittee, using formulas comprising economic measurements and other relevant dimensions such as current paid wages, cost-of-living indexes, inflation rates, standard average cost of living, cost of production, price of goods and services, business potential, workforce productivity, gross domestic product (GDP) and current economic and social conditions. The outcome will be a tripartite resolution consisting of representatives of employees, employers and the public sector, with a common consensus not guided by either party.
Once suitable wages are finalized, the Ministry of Labour will present the Wage Committee’s conclusions to Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul, for further presentation to the Cabinet for final approval before enforcement.
