The Labour Minister assigned his Assistant to commence the training for trainers on “creating good and valuable work by promoting labour responsibility among businesses in the poultry meat supply chain.” The program supports and encourages businesses in Thailand to conduct business with social responsibility, emphasizing the enhancement in the quality of products, the quality of life of workers, and developing Thailand’s economy towards stability, prosperity and sustainability without leaving anyone behind, following the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals.
On November 12, 2020, at 09.00 hours, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned Assistant to the Labour Minister Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong to commence the training for trainers on “creating good and valuable work by promoting labour responsibility among businesses in the poultry meat supply chain,” at the Swissotel Bangkok. The said training is a cooperation between the International Labour Organization, Thai Poultry Meat Producers for Export Association, and the Employers’ Organization Council of Thailand, under the Sustainable Supply Chain Development Program in Asia, funded by the European Union.
Mr. Surachai said that today, the international arena focuses on the human rights issue and labour governance in the supply chain business by addressing labour and sustainability issues as a key requirement in free trade negotiations and preferential tariffs, or GSPs. Many governments have tried to enact laws requiring businesses to concern their respective supply chains to respect labour rights. Both domestic and international consumers expect that the manufacturers and related trading partners comply with international labour standards. In the Thai business sector, it is necessary to be vigilant and determined to raise labour standards and among their partners throughout the supply chain, to increase the competitiveness of trade and build consumer acceptance.
The Ministry of Labour plays an important role in protecting workers’ rights according to the law, providing a safe working environment with great emphasis on raising the level of Thai labour laws in line with international standards. It aims to develop a labour inspection system for effective law enforcement and promote establishments to operate businesses responsibly to workers in the supply chain. Companies have been promoted to comply with the Thai Labour Standards System (TLS 8001) or Good Labor Practices (GLP). It is a good opportunity to show that the Thai Poultry Meat Producers Association and three leading businesses in the sector, Betagro, Cargill Meats (Thailand), and Charoen Pokphand Foods, recognize the importance of labour law and corporate governance to create valuable work. He said that everyone sitting here plays a very important role in creating work conditions that comply with international standards. In addition to enhancing the quality of products to meet society’s and consumers’ expectations, it also enhances the quality of life of workers. It develops the Thai economy for our society to move forward in a stable, prosperous, and sustainable way, where we will not leave anyone. This follows the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals, concluded Mr. Surachai.
