Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol directed Thai Labour Offices abroad to take care of Thai workers for a good quality of life according to the rights they should have, receive fair wages with appropriate welfare and protection by law, in accordance with the government’s policy to reduce social inequality. The Permanent Secretary emphasized care for both Thai and foreign workers in Thailand and urged Minister-Counselors (on Labour) at Thai Labour Offices abroad to organize an inspection on the well-being of Thai workers, to educate them about their rights and duties, including the channel of contact for the department of service at the Thai Labor Office, in order to see and acknowledge the problems and quality of life for Thai workers in need of different assistance.
Minister-Counselor (on labour) Ms. Kamonwan Boonyuen from Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower formed a labour inspection program at Westlite Mandai Dormitory, located at 34 Mandai Estate, 01-15, Singapore. The dormitory is managed by Lian Beng Company – Centurion (Dormitory) Pte Ltd. and is a standard dormitory approved by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) for foreign workers. Such dormitories have a dining area, washing and drying clothes area and a gym. There are 6,300 foreign workers in the dormitory, with 215 Thai workers, mostly in the construction workers and industrial technicians.
The Minister-Counselor (on labour) from the Thai Labour Office in Singapore greeted the workers and shared information about labour rights, channels for disseminating information on rights and duties of foreign workers in Singapore, and channels for contacting the Labour Office in Singapore. She also provided knowledge on primary health care regarding hypertension, indications for heart disease, blood pressure measurements and weighing services, along with handing out a guide to claiming benefits as Thai workers in Singapore. She also met and spoke with the workers to understand their problem and see their quality of life.
The effort was in cooperation with Counselor Ms. Puntana Prakobchart to publicize consular services and hand out manuals. In the end, there was a draw to distribute sports equipment, basic consumer goods helpful to the workforce, whereby there were about 60 attendees.
