Labour Minister Assigns Permanent Secretary to Join Deputy PM Delegation to Deliver Multi-Purpose Boats and Floating Restrooms and Encourage Flood Victims in Kanchanaburi

          On October 20, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong to join the delegation of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan to visit the area to listen to a briefing on the water situation in Kanchanaburi, along with handing over water management policies. Governor of Kanchanaburi Province, Mr. Chirakiat Phumsawat, gave a summary of the situation. The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s Director-General Mr. Niyom Songkaew and executives of relevant agencies welcomed and honoured the occasion of the Deputy Prime Minister pressing the button to open the community water in Thung Krabi Subdistrict, Lao Khwan District via electronic system. The Deputy Prime Minister and delegation then delivered a multipurpose boat and floating restrooms following the DSD’s Social Volunteer project by Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong to give to Kanchanaburi as many areas were flooded for several consecutive days, causing the people to go about their daily lives with difficulty. The Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development organized the DSD’s Social Volunteer project with love and concern from the Ministry of Labour and the private sector. The initiative is cooperation from the skill development network that supported materials and equipment for the Department of Skill Development to create multipurpose boats and floating toilets to be delivered to 77 flood-affected provinces to continue helping people affected by the floods.

          From there, the Deputy Prime Minister and Permanent Secretary of Labour met with community leaders, Section 40 insured persons, and Kanchanaburi labour volunteers who came to welcome and help the victims. The labour volunteers have a mission to coordinate labour services in the area, to provide people with jobs, skills, careers, and income, and ensure they are protected and have sustainable social security as well.

          Mr. Boonchob said that the Ministry of Labour, under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, is concerned about the workforce and the people affected by the flood situation. Today, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin assigned him to visit the area to monitor the situation, encourage the people and give relief bags to alleviate the suffering of the workers.
Mr. Boonchob also spoke about the measures of assistance from agencies under the Ministry of Labour in Kanchanaburi. After the water recedes, the Provincial Employment Office will provide employment and occupational promotion services. The Provincial Labour Office will organize an urgent employment and skill development project, support compensation, and provide professional training materials for continuous income. The Provincial Labour Protection and Welfare Office will provide advice on rights under the labour protection laws. Additionally, the Provincial Social Security Office will take care of benefits for the victims according to their social security rights. It will organize a team of doctors and nurses from hospitals in the network to provide initial care services in the affected areas.

          “Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan is concerned about the workers and people affected by the flood. Therefore, the Ministry of Labour was instructed to work with relevant agencies to mobilize all forces to help the workers and the people to be safe to the fullest extent. The goal is to accelerate recovery after the water recedes according to the mission of each unit to alleviate the trouble and bring the situation back to normal as soon as possible,” concluded Mr. Boonchob.

          Chairman of the Kanchanaburi Labour Volunteer, Mr. Wichian Eksiriwaranon, said that he had been a labour volunteer for many years and has helped drive labour volunteers to carry out the Ministry of Labour’s mission to provide information to villagers in the community, including the recruitment, freelance training, labour protection, public relations for Section 40 insured persons’ benefits and the legal employment of foreign workers. Some of the efforts have not yet reached the community members. But when he visited the households, the efforts were well received, as the labour volunteers work with sacrifice and heart.

          Miss Areerat Tangwongcharoen, a Section 40 insured person, thanked the government and the Ministry of Labour for allowing self-employed persons to apply as an insured persons under Section 40, giving them access to remedial assistance from the government and more social security guarantees.
