Labour Minister Responds to Deputy PM Instructions to Investigate Foreign Workers in Samut Sakhon and Control Covid-19 Outbreaks in the Workplace

          Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin responded to the orders of Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan and delegated Major General Nantachat Supamongkol from the Office of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to visit Samut Sakhon together with the working group on security and related agencies to check the work of foreigners and control the Covid-19 pandemic among workers in the workplace.
          On May 25, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin delegated Major General Nantachat Supamongkol from the Office of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to visit Samut Sakhon, together with the working group on security and related agencies, to check the work of foreigners in the workplace. The visit aims to control the Covid-19 pandemic situation among Thai and foreign workers in the workplace, following Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan’s orders from the meeting at the Government Houses on May 24. He emphasized that the Security Department, the Military, Police, the Administrative Department, and the Ministry of Labour work as one to intensify surveillance, prevent and suppress illegal immigration, and control the situation following measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among workers in the workplace. Maj. Gen. Nantachat said that today, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin, assigned him and the group to go to the Samut Sakhon area and the Security Department and related agencies to check the work of foreigners in the workplace. They met with employees, employers, and other stakeholders involved in driving government policies to intensify surveillance, prevent and suppress illegal immigration of foreign workers, and controlling the situation following measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials from the Samut Sakhon Provincial Public Health Office and Samut Sakhon Immigration Office jointly visited four companies including, 1) The construction of a commercial building on Thonburi-Pak Tho Road, located at Kalong Sub-district, Muang District, Samut Sakhon Province. There were no Thai workers. There were 18 foreign workers employed, comprising ten male and eight female employees. There were five 15 Laotian workers, comprising eight men and seven women. There were three Cambodian workers, comprising two men and one woman. Sixteen of the workers had valid documents to work and reside in the Kingdom. For the remaining two workers, one person did not have a work permit, and the other person’s work permit expired on March 31, 2021. The workers were guilty of not having a passport document to show. Officers detained the two foreign workers and sent them to investigators for further prosecution on charges of being a foreigner working without a work permit, under Section 8, punishable under Section 101 of the Royal Decree on Foreign Worker Management. The workers were also charged with being alien in the Kingdom without permission, or expiration, or revoked permissions under Section 81 of the Immigration Act, B.E. 2522. As for the employer, the officers filed a complaint with the investigation officer at Bangthorad Police Station, charged with allowing foreigners to work without a permit under Section 9, punishable by Section 102. 2) Happy Mai Lin Seafoods Co., Ltd., located at No. 29/1, Moo 4, Tha Chin Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province. The company processes aquatic animals. There were three Thai people and 36 foreign workers employed. The foreign workers comprised ten men and 26 women, all of whom were Myanmar nationals. The foreign workers had valid work permits and documents for permission to stay in the Kingdom. 3) Lhong Pla Mr. Kittipong, located in Wat Kraeo Khao, Ban Bo Subdistrict, Muang District, Samut Sakhon Province. The company is in the business of animal processing. There was one Thai worker and ten foreign workers employed. The foreign workers comprised five men and five women. All of them were Myanmar nationals with valid work permits and permission to stay in the Kingdom, and 4) Miracle Chemicals Co., Ltd., located at 58 Moo 9, Bang Krachao Subdistrict, Muang District, Samut Sakhon Province. The company produces and sells recycled plastic. There were seven Thais and 32 foreign workers employed. All foreign workers were men, and all Myanmar nationals with valid work permits and permission to stay in the Kingdom.
          The action will help drive government policies to tighten, monitor, prevent and suppress illegal immigration by foreign workers and control the situation following measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among workers in the workplace.
