On August 20, 2021, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin welcomed Dr. Sok Sokrethya, Personal Advisor to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian Minister of Tourism, together with Associate Professor Sangsit Piriyarangsan, senators, and delegates on the occasion of meeting with the Labour Minister to discuss issues of cooperation in caring for Cambodian workers and promoting the employment of more workers in Thailand. Assistant to the Labour Minister Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong, the Labour Minister’s Secretariat Mr. Suthep Chitayawong, the Ministry of Labour’s Spokesperson (on politics) Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol, and the Ministry of Labour’s executives also joined the occasion at the Chatumongkol Room, 6th Floor, Ministry of Labour. Mr. Suchart said that today, the Ministry of Labour was very pleased to have the opportunity to welcome everyone. The Ministry of Labour has received support from Cambodian workers in driving the economy. In particular, the workers who came to help harvest crops along the border in the past. The Thai government, led by Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha, focuses on resolving labour shortages, especially in the business sector, in exports, construction, textiles, and frozen food.
Mr. Suchart said that the Ministry of Labour had organized foreign workers during the COVID-19 situation, correcting illegal workers by collecting their personal identities, going through health checks, issuing work permits, resolving issues and wrongdoings by employers, and converting workers into the social security system. The Ministry of Labour has also taken steps on proactive COVID-19 screening in the workplace, treatment for infected persons, active screenings, vaccinations, and delivering food boxes to campsite workers under the “Shops to Workers Sharing” project. In addition, the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Employment is also preparing to trial a special MOU for importing workers into certain types of businesses. The incoming workers must be vaccinated from the country of origin and quarantined. The initiative aims to create group immunity for workers, allowing them to work, earn an income, have security in life, and create safety and confidence for the general public.
