วันที่ 5 มีนาคม 2566 นายสุชาติ ชมกลิ่น รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงแรงงาน ร่วมทำบุญตักบาตรกับแรงงานไทยและชุมชนคนไทยในเมืองเมลเบิร์น เนื่องในวันมาฆบูชา โดยมี พระครูโชติธรรมวิเทศ (ธานี ชุติกาโม) เจ้าอาวาสวัดธรรมรังษี ประธานฝ่ายสงฆ์ นายสุรชัย ชัยตระกูลทอง ผู้ช่วยรัฐมนตรีประจำกระทรวงแรงงาน นายบุญชอบ สุทธมนัสวงษ์ ปลัดกระทรวงแรงงาน นางสาวอาจารี ศรีรัตนบัลล์ เอกอัครราชทูตไทย ณ กรุงแคนเบอร์รา พร้อมด้วย ผู้บริหารระดับสูงกระทรวงแรงงาน และคนไทยในเมืองเมลเบิร์นร่วมพิธีทำบุญกว่า 70 คน ณ วัดธรรมรังษี นครเมลเบิร์น ประเทศออสเตรเลีย
ทั้งนี้ ปัจจุบันมีคนไทยพำนักอยู่ในออสเตรเลียกว่า 100,000คน มีแรงงานไทยที่ขออนุญาตเดินทางไปทำงานปี 2561-2565 จำนวน 197 คน ซึ่งแรงงานที่พำนักและทำงานส่วนใหญ่เดินทางไปด้วยตนเองไม่ได้ผ่านกรมการจัดหางาน ซึ่งออสเตรเลียมีร้านนวดไทย 851 แห่ง มีร้านอาหารไทยมากกว่า 3,000 กว่าร้าน แรงงานไทยส่วนใหญ่เดินทางไปทำงานภาคบริการ รองลงมาคือ ผู้ปฏิบัติงานโดยใช้ฝีมือในธุรกิจต่าง ๆ อีกส่วนหนึ่งเข้าไปประกอบธุรกิจส่วนตัวในออสเตรเลีย ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นธุรกิจเกี่ยวกับภัตตาคารและ ร้านอาหาร นอกจากนั้นจะเป็นธุรกิจภาคบริการอื่น ๆ
ด้านคุณเอ(นามสมมุติ)คนไทยที่อาศัยอยู่ในเมลเบิร์นบอกว่าดีใจมากที่รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงแรงงานและคณะมาขยายตลาดแรงงานและมาดูเรื่องวีซ่าการทำงานของคนไทยในประเทศออสเตรเลียเนื่องจากตอนนี้พวกเราต้องการความช่วยเหลือ ผู้ประกอบการไทยต้องการแรงงานที่เป็นคนไทยเป็นจำนวนมากที่นี่หลังจากสถาณการณ์โควิดคลี่คลายลงก็เกิดปัญหาขาดแคลนแรงงานในทุกอาชีพการที่รัฐมนตรีลงมาดูสถานการณ์จริงน่าจะช่วยแก้ปัญหาให้กับพวกเราที่เป็นผู้ประกอบการที่นี่ได้เป็นอย่างดี
อย่างไรก็ตาม การเดินทางเยือนออสเตรเลียของรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงแรงงาน และคณะในครั้งนี้จะเป็นโอกาสอันดีที่จะช่วยส่งเสริมนโยบายรัฐบาลในการสร้างงาน และโอกาสในการประกอบอาชีพให้กับคนไทยได้ไปทำงานในต่างประเทศมากขึ้นเนื่องจากออสเตรเลีย เป็นตลาดที่มีศักยภาพ มีความต้องการแรงงานสูง มีระดับมาตรฐานค่าจ้างและสภาพการทำงานที่ดีอีกด้วย

On March 5, 2023, the Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, joined a making-merit ceremony with Thai workers and the Thai community in Melbourne on Makha Bucha Day. Phrakru Choti Thammawitet (Thani Chutikamo), the Abbot of Wat Thammarangsi, Monastic President, Assistant to the Labour Minister, Mr. Surachai Chaitrakulthong, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong, Ambassador of Thailand in Canberra, Ms. Ajaree Srirattanaban, the Ministry of Labour’s executives and over 70 Thai people in Melbourne joined the merit-making ceremony at Wat Thammarangsi in Melbourne, Australia.
Over 100,000 Thai people are living in Australia. 197 Thai workers applied for work permits from 2018-2022. Most migrants who stay and work can travel alone without going through the Department of Employment. There are 851 Thai massage parlors in Australia and over 3,000 Thai restaurants. Most Thai workers work in the service sector, followed by skilled practitioners in various businesses. Another part goes into self-employment in Australia, most of which are businesses related to restaurants and catering. Others are in the service sector businesses.
Khun A (anonymous name), a Thai resident in Melbourne, said that she was very happy that the Labour Minister and team were visiting to expand the labour market and to look after the work visas for Thai people in Australia. Now, they need help as many Thai businesses require Thai workers. After the COVID-19 situation, every profession has a shortage of workers. Having the Labour Minister visit and observe the real situation should solve the problem for those who are business operators.
The Labour Minister and delegation’s visit to Australia this time will be a good opportunity to help promote government policies to create jobs and career opportunities for Thai people to work abroad. Australia is a potential market with a high demand for labour and good standards of wages and working conditions.
