Labour Minister Shows Concern for Phuket Workforce and Assigned Deputy Permanent Secretary to Visit the Area to Accelerate Employment to Overcome Covid-19

                The Labour Minister showed concern for workers in Phuket who were impacted by Covid-19. He assigned the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour to visit the area and accelerate recovery and promote employment to overcome Covid-19.

                On September 13, 2020, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin revealed that Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha is concerned about working in the Phuket area, especially as tourism and service sectors were heavily affected Covid-19. Therefore, the prime minister has ordered the Ministry of Labour to visit the area to aid, accelerate occupational recovery, and promote employment for those affected by Covid-19 today. The Labour Minister assigned Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat to visit Phuket to preside over the opening ceremony and encourage people who received vocational training to people affected by Covid-19 the project to promote employment and income by the Phuket Employment Office.

                Mrs. Theanrat Nawamawat added that today’s training course was on “Japanese Sashiko Hand Embroidery” for a group of Nakha villagers in Pa Khlok, Thalang, Phuket, with a total of 20 participants. This group of workers go crab fishing in the morning and become free in the afternoon. Therefore, they have taken advantage of this free time to come together to practice Japanese style sashiko handcrafted embroidery, to make products to sell to tourists. It creates income for themselves and their families. The Phuket Skill Development Institute 21 has also provided additional vocational training for tour guides and hotel staff in Batik cloth painting, coffee and bakeries, Thai desserts and snacks, and popular beverages, totaling over 400 people allow the public to gain knowledge and skills for further occupations.

                Phuket, in the process of recovery after the Covid-19 situation, has begun to improve. Previously, The Ministry of Labour had diagnosed and approved unemployment benefits due to the force majeure from Covid-19 to 145,721 cases, approving 126,307 payouts valuing 1,466,138,301.45 Baht, coupled with other measures to help the unemployed. In Phuket, there was a meeting with sub-worker groups at the end of August. Over 3,000 people have applied for jobs. They have already filled almost 500 jobs and will continue to fill in the rest.

                In addition, the government by the Ministry of Labour and relevant agencies will organize the JOB EXPO THAILAND 2020 during September 26-28, 2020, at BITEC Bangna Exhibition and Convention Center. The event will have 1,000,000 positions, divided into 106,312 vacancies by the Department of Employment, 112,242 overseas roles, 66,881 part-time jobs, and 410,415 vacancies by the government, 260,000 roles following measures to promote employment for graduates. And 44,150 jobs that are expected to employ Thai workers instead of foreign workers. The event is divided into exhibition zones, including the Father of Thai Craftsmanship Standards, the government sector zone, the state-owned enterprise zone, the private sector zone, the stage zone, the exhibition zone, the professional demonstration zone, and the guidance zone.
